Location
- is one of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean
Sea, and belonging to Spain. Menorca, located at the eastern
extremity of Spain, 225 km southeast of Barcelona, is the
second largest of the Balearic Islands. The others are Mallorca,
Ibiza and Formentera. It is located around 39°47' to 40°00'N,
3°52' to 4°24'E.
Area covered - 700 sq km (270sqm)
Terrain - The terrain is mostly low but has
a hilly center. The island has a large collection of megalithic
stone monuments: navetes, taules, and talaiots. The island
boasts 220 kms of coastline and more beaches than all the
other Balearic islands put together.
Agriculture - Cereals, wine, olive oil, and
flax are the chief products. Much of the agriculture is irrigated.
Lobster fishing, the export of livestock, and local light
industries add to the economy.
Language - Spanish (Castilian). The local
dialect of Catalan is called Menorquí: Grammatical
differences with Central Catalan are minimal, and differences
exist mostly only in pronunciation. As with most Balearic
dialects, the most remarkable difference is the use of the
article "the", where Menorquí uses "es"
for masculine and "sa" for feminine instead of Catalan
"el" and "la", a form which was historically
used in part of the present-day province of Girona, in Catalonia,
from where the islands were repopulated after being conquered
from the Moors.
Religion - Roman Catholic
